Goodbye Mr. Muffin

A life-affirming and warm-hearted story about parting

The guinea pig Mr. Muffin is no longer doing well. His body is old, and he’s got a belly ache. On many days, he prefers sitting in a rocking chair in his boot box house and philosophise and reminisce about a long life full of happy memories.

But parting isn’t easy. ”I feel so sad ’cause Dad says you’re going to die soon,” the child writes in a letter which he drops into Mr. Muffin’s little red letter box.

The story about Mr. Muffin has two threads. One is the story about Mr. Muffin who reminisces about a happy life with wife and children, a blue house with a red letter box, daily cuddling, crispy almonds and juicy cucumbers. The other is the story about the child who is going to say goodbye and uses his letters for Mr. Muffin to work through his feelings and the uncertainty: ”I’ve been thinking all night about Death. I’ve been thinking that either you just go to rest, and that’s nothing to be afraid of, or else you go to heaven, and everything will be fine.”

The story gently puts life and death in words and pictures – for nobody lives for ever in this world. And in an atmosphere of peace and acceptance, Mr. Muffin finally leaves our world.
